Peacock

Eva Meijer

‘Parcel bombs,’ Marcel whispered.
‘What?’
‘Haven’t you read about those parcel bombs? They’re mine. You drop the parcel through the mailbox at the right time and walk away. That’s all. The main thing is timing. You can never be early but also not late. You don’t want the parcel to explode in your car. So you have to avoid traffic jams.’

Iris Peacock and her dog Pol move to a remote village by the sea. Then she meets the animal activist Marcel who gradually convinces her to take a stand on how people are treating animals. He is a skilled watchmaker with certain beliefs of what has to happen. In this he takes some risks for granted. Risks for himself and risks for others.

In a shed in his garden he constructs parcel bombs and Iris helps him drop the parcels through butcher’s mailboxes at night. At the peak of their action gaining national attention the inevitable happens. Someone is hurt and Iris has to consult herself, how could she let herself get carried away. Or does the end justify the means?

Peacock is a confrontational and tragicomic novel about humans and other animals, about thinking for yourself and wanting to do the right thing for a world in which it is indistinct what doing the right thing exactly means.

‘In clear and vivid language, Eva Meijer describes a hesitant love story, beautiful reflections on the lives of humans and animals, a couple of eerie attacks on butcheries and tragicomic scenes in prison and court.’ – NRC Handelsblad ****

‘The intimate relationship between man and dog is beautifully tangible in Eva Meijer’s novel.’ – Opzij

‘The most stubborn carnivore could read Peacock with a lot of pleasure.’ – Recensieweb.nl

‘Vegetarianism meets Breaking Bad.’ - @NLVegan

‘The prose of Peacock reminds me of the somber, clinical but beautiful storytelling of J.M. Coetzee.’ – MixedGrill.nl

Peacock is a clean and clear told story about the continuum between idealism and terrorism interwoven with the great, perhaps ideal, love between woman and dog.’ – Book Store Over het Water, Amsterdam

‘How deep her love for animals runs with Eva Meijer isn’t exactly clear after reading Peacock. Strangely enough that is the power of this tragicomic novel. Meijer wants to persuade her readers to start thinking. This is a subtle, though provoking, somewhat eccentric character study of human beings, which weighs its options carefully and still loses grip on the situation.’ – Trouw
